Why run AI locally · Part 2
Is local AI cheaper than a ChatGPT or Claude subscription?
ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro and Google AI Pro cost about $20 a month. A $607 mini PC equals 30 months of that. Here is the math, and why it isn’t a like-for-like trade.

- ChatGPT Plus $20/mo; ChatGPT Pro $100, $200 or $500/mo (OpenAI).
- Claude Pro $20/mo or $17/mo billed yearly; Max $100 or $200/mo (Anthropic).
- Google AI Pro $19.99/mo; AI Ultra $99.99 or $199.99/mo (Google).
- Break-even vs a $20 plan: about 30 months for a $607 mini PC (our arithmetic, before electricity).
Short answer: only if you’d otherwise pay for a plan for years, or pay for an expensive one. The main plans cost $20 a month (ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro) or $19.99 (Google AI Pro). A $607 mini PC costs the same as about 30 months of that, and an RTX 5060 Ti prebuilt about 80 months. Against the $100–$200 plans, hardware pays for itself in months. But a local model isn’t the same product as a frontier cloud model, so the money is only half the question.
What the cloud plans cost
| Plan | Monthly (US, before tax) | Per year |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Plus | $20 | $240 |
| ChatGPT Pro | $100 / $200 / $500 | $1,200 / $2,400 / $6,000 |
| Claude Pro | $20 ($17 billed yearly) | $240 ($200 yearly) |
| Claude Max | $100 / $200 | $1,200 / $2,400 |
| Google AI Pro | $19.99 | $239.88 |
| Google AI Ultra | $99.99 / $199.99 | $1,199.88 / $2,399.88 |
What local hardware costs
Three price points from our own checks (new retail):
- $607: Minisforum NAB6 Lite with 32 GB RAM. It holds small models like Llama 3.1 8B in system RAM (can a $600 mini PC run local AI?).
- $1,599.99: ABS Cyclone Aqua prebuilt with an RTX 5060 Ti 16GB. It fits gpt-oss 20B (14 GB) on the GPU (see the fit).
- $3,919: Minisforum MS-S1 MAX 128 GB. It holds gpt-oss 120B, a 65 GB download (see the fit).
The software is free: Ollama, and open-weight models such as gpt-oss and Llama, cost nothing to download.

The break-even math
Divide the hardware price by the monthly fee: $607 ÷ $20 is about 30 months; $1,599.99 ÷ $20 is about 80 months. Against a $100 plan the same machines break even in about 6 and 16 months, and the 128 GB box breaks even against a $200 plan in about 20 months. That’s our arithmetic, and it leaves out three things:
- Electricity. A PC running a model draws power. We don’t have a measured figure for these machines, so we don’t estimate it.
- Resale and reuse. The PC is still a PC: it does other work and has resale value. A subscription leaves nothing when you cancel.
- What you get. This is the big one. See the next section.
It’s not a like-for-like trade
A $20 plan gets you the provider’s frontier models, plus image generation, voice, file analysis and deep research. A home PC runs open models that are smaller. On the LMArena text leaderboard, Gemma 4 26B A4B, the best-ranked open model we list that fits a 16 GB card, is #100 overall, behind many proprietary models (checked Oct 27, 2026; see the model finder). For everyday writing, summarizing and private notes, a local model can be enough. For the hardest reasoning or coding, the cloud models are still ahead.
So the honest comparison is: is a local model good enough for what you pay a subscription for? If yes, local wins on cost after a couple of years at $20, and much sooner if you pay for a $100–$200 plan. If no, you’ll likely keep a subscription anyway.
Who comes out ahead
- Heavy users on $100–$200 plans who mostly need a capable general model: hardware can pay for itself within a year or two.
- Households with several people: one local box serves everyone on your network, while cloud plans are per person. Keep it off the open internet.
- Light users: the free tiers of the cloud services may cost you nothing at all. Buying hardware only to save money rarely makes sense here.

How much is ChatGPT Plus per month?
$20 a month in the US, billed monthly, per OpenAI’s help center (checked Oct 27, 2026). ChatGPT Pro is $100, $200 or $500 a month.
How long until a local AI PC pays for itself?
Against a $20/month plan, a $607 mini PC equals about 30 months of fees and a $1,599.99 RTX 5060 Ti prebuilt about 80 months. That is our arithmetic and excludes electricity.
Is a local model as good as ChatGPT?
Not at the top end. The open models a home PC can hold rank below the best proprietary models on LMArena, but they handle everyday writing and summarizing.
Do I have to pay for local AI software?
No. Ollama is free and open-weight models such as gpt-oss and Llama are free to download.
